DURHAM, N.C. -- Freshman guard Tyus Jones was named the ACC Rookie of the Week, as announced by the conference office Sunday. The announcement marks the fifth weekly freshman honor received by Jones this season, after he was named the conference rookie of the week Dec. 8, Jan. 26 and Feb. 23 and the Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Week Feb. 24.
Jones led Duke to a pair of victories as the Blue Devils capped off the regular season with a 28-3 record overall and a 15-3 mark in ACC play. The Apple Valley, Minn., native averaged 17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game in wins over Wake Forest and No. 19 North Carolina. Jones opened the week with 10 points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals in a lopsided win over Wake Forest. He knocked down both of his three-point attempts against the Demon Deacons as Duke posted a 43-point win for the largest margin of victory in series history.
Jones continued his outstanding play against ranked opponents in an 84-77 win at No. 19 North Carolina Saturday. He scored a season-high 24 points, including 17 in the second half of play, and added six rebounds, seven assists and three steals as Duke completed a regular season sweep of the Tar Heels. Jones was 5-of-10 from the field, including 2-of-4 from three-point range, and 12-of-12 from the foul line as he posted his sixth 20-point game of the year. Jones set a Duke freshman single-game record for most free throws without a miss in the contest.
Jones rates as one of the top freshman guards in the conference this season. His 5.7 apg. average ranks second in the ACC and his free-throw percentage (.882) leads the league. Jones’ assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.88:1 ranks fourth in the conference.
