Durham, N.C. – Mike Krzyzewski was honored as the U.S. Basketball Writers Association District III Coach of the Year on Tuesday, while DeMarcus Nelson and Kyle Singler were selected to the USBWA All-District team.
Krzyzewski has guided Duke to a 26-4 record this season and 13-3 mark in the ACC. Earlier this season he led them to the Maui Invitational Championship. The Blue Devils started the season 10-0 and then after an overtime loss to Pittsburgh in Madison Square Garden rattled off 12 straight wins. It is the fifth time in Krzyzewski’s career he has been named District Coach of the Year. He was named NABC District II Coach of the Year in 1977 and NABC District III Coach of the Year in 1984, 1992 and 1994.
Nelson has started all 30 games this season for the Blue Devils. He leads the team in scoring (15.2 ppg.), field goals made (156), free throws made and attempted (105-of-173), steals (49) and minutes played (31.0 mpg.). He has reached double figures in scoring in 25 of the 30 games with seven games of 20 or more points. Nelson has been even better in conference play this season averaging 16.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.
Singler has also started all 30 games this year. He leads the team in rebounding (6.1 rpg.) and is second in scoring (14.2 ppg.), field goals (150), three-point field goals (49) and blocks (22). He has recorded four double-doubles on the year. He has reached double figures in scoring in 24 games this year, including the last 12 contests. He also has four 20-point games this season and averaged 15.1 points and 6.2 rebounds in ACC games.
Nelson and Singler were both named to the NABC All-District team last week and have also been selected to the All-ACC squads this season.
