The Opening Tip
Duke, ranked ninth in the AP preseason poll and eighth in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll, opens the 2009-10 season on Friday, Nov. 13 against UNC Greensboro. The Blue Devils have won nine straight season openers. Friday’s contest tips off at 7:00 p.m. and will be televised by Fox Sports South.
The Last Time Out
Duke posted an 84-48 win over 2009 DII national champion Findlay on Nov. 3 in its final tuneup for the 2009-10 season. Kyle Singler netted a game-high 20 points to go along with nine rebounds and four assists to pace the Blue Devils. Senior Jon Scheyer added 19 points, while sophomore Miles Plumlee posted nine points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in the win.
Series History
Duke is 7-0 all-time against UNC Greensboro with all seven wins coming with Mike Krzyzewski on the sidelines. The Blue Devils are 5-0 at Cameron Indoor Stadium in the series and have topped 85 points scored in five of the seven games all-time.
The Last Duke-UNCG Meeting
Duke posted a 75-48 win over the Spartans at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Nov. 16, 2006 in the last meeting between the two programs. Brian Zoubek recorded a team-high 17 points, seven rebounds (five offensive), two assists, two blocks and two steals in the game. He was 7-of-11 from the field and 3-of-3 from the foul line in the win.
Numbers Game
- Duke has won nine straight season openers by an average of 32.8 points per game. The Blue Devils are 27-2 under Mike Krzyzewski in season openers. Duke’s last season opening loss was against Stanford (80-79) in the 1999 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Madison Square Garden.
- The Blue Devils have won 27 straight home openers and are 28-1 in home openers under Krzyzewski. Duke’s last loss in a home opener was a 76-75 double-overtime defeat to Vanderbilt on Nov. 28, 1982.
- Duke returns nine letterwinners, including four starters, from last year’s team that went 30-7 overall and won the ACC Tournament championship.
- The Blue Devils have won an NCAA-best 68 consecutive non-conference home games.
- Duke has won 28 straight home games against unranked opponents, dating back to a 68-67 loss to Florida State on Feb. 4, 2007.
- The Blue Devils averaged 106.0 points per game in exhibition wins over Pfeiffer (128-70) and Findlay (84-48). Kyle Singler averaged 20.5 points per game, while shooting 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the field and 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from three-point range to pace the offensive attack.
- Miles and Mason Plumlee combined for 12 blocked shots in the two exhibition games. Miles averaged 10.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per game, while Mason posted 12.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 blocks in the two games. They are the sixth brother tandem to play together at Duke.
- Duke posted a 124-62 (+31.0 rpg.) rebounding edge in exhibition wins over Pfeiffer and Findlay. The Blue Devils boast a roster with six scholarship players that are 6’8” or taller.
- Duke’s Jon Scheyer (1,349 points) and Kyle Singler (1,060 points) are the highest returning career scoring tandem in the ACC with 2,409 career points.
- Junior Nolan Smith will miss the first two games of the season while serving a suspension for violating rules pertaining to summer league participation.
- Duke has won 44 straight games against Southern Conference opponents (last loss was 75-73 versus Davidson on Dec. 29, 1981). The Blue Devils are 139-24 all-time against teams currently in the Southern Conference.
- Mike Krzyzewski has led the Blue Devils to a 44-2 record against schools currently in the Southern Conference.
- Senior Jon Scheyer has been moved to point guard for the 2009-10 season. The Northbrook, Ill., native averaged 18.6 points, 2.4 assists and 1.8 steals while playing point over the final 12 games of last season.
- The 2009-10 season marks the 50th anniversary of Duke’s first ACC Tournament championship.
