COLUMBUS, Ohio – Two Blue Devil divers competed at the 2017 USA Diving National Championships this week, with sophomore Nathaniel Hernandez qualifying for finals in the men’s three-meter springboard event.

After finishing 14th in the one-meter preliminaries Tuesday, Hernandez returned to the boards in the three-meter preliminaries Wednesday. He was seventh in the preliminary round and then improved upon that score to take seventh in the event semifinals later that day (350.00).

In Friday evening’s final, Hernandez opened his list by scoring 55.50 points on a forward 2 ½ somersault. He topped the 65-point mark in the second round on a forward 3 ½ somersault and again in the fifth round on a reverse 3 ½ somersault. The Southlake, Texas native wrapped up the final with a total award of 353.20 points, good for sixth overall.

Senior MaryEllen Targonski joined Hernandez at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion Tuesday, as she competed in the women’s one-meter springboard preliminaries. Targonski totaled 215.85 points for 14th overall.

Both Blue Devil divers turned in strong performances during the 2016-17 collegiate season, advancing to the 2017 NCAA Championships. Targonski became the third female diver in Duke history to garner All-America recognition with a 16th-place finish on the platform at NCAAs. Hernandez rounded out his rookie season in Indianapolis as well, placing 36th in the platform preliminaries.
