PHOENIX, Ariz. – Redshirt senior guard Rebecca Greenwell became the 11th player in Duke women’s basketball history to reach 1,500 points in her career as the 12th-ranked Blue Devils defeated Grand Canyon, 74-61, Sunday in the season opener in Phoenix, Ariz.

Greenwell led all players with 19 points, posting a perfect 5-of-5 from behind the arc, 6-of-8 from the floor, and added seven rebounds and five assists to her performance. In addition to exceeding the 1,500-point plateau, Greenwell moved to 24th on the ACC career three-point list with 590 attempted threes over her career.

Freshman Mikayla Boykin opened the game with a quick three in under 20 seconds to put the Blue Devils on top early before Grand Canyon went on an 8-0 run. Greenwell connected early from deep to cut the lead to two and followed up with three more treys for a perfect 4-of-4 from behind the arc. Greenwell led all scorers with 12 after the first period with Duke ahead 19-14.

Sophomore Leaonna Odom exploded in the second quarter with seven straight points in the paint and from the free-throw-line to silence the Lopes. Grand Canyon responded by a 7-0 run of their own before Odom hit a low turnaround jumper to give her nine points, all in the second. With the clock expiring, redshirt senior Lexie Brown connected on a baseline jumper just inside the arc to give the Blue Devils a 40-31 lead entering the half.

Senior Erin Mathias had a breakout second half with 10 of her 12 points coming in the final 20 minutes of the contest. Mathias finished with 12 on the afternoon, just one off her career-high.

Greenwell tallied her fifth assist of the game as she found Boykin at the top of the key to give Duke a 10-point lead with under four minutes to play.

Duke finished at 54 percent (7-for-13) from behind the arc, 47 percent from the floor (27-of-58) and added 34 points in the paint and limited Grand Canyon to just 10.

All five starters for the Blue Devils registered double-digits in Greenwell (19), Brown (13), Odom (13), Boykin (12) and Mathias (12) as Grand Canyon’s Gajewski, Murphy and Mobley each recorded 15 to lead the Lopes’ offense.  It marked the first time since 2015 Duke has notched all five starters in double-figure scoring.

The Blue Devils will return to Cameron Indoor Stadium for their home opener against in-state High Point. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m., on ACC Network Extra.
