DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke men’s lacrosse team has vaulted into the No. 1 spot in the latest USILA poll on the strength of its three commanding victories to start 2018. The Blue Devils are No. 1 for the first time in the regular season since the Feb. 24, 2014 poll.
Duke, ranked second in the USILA preseason poll, jumped previous No. 1 Maryland after winning each of its first three games by at least 10 goals. The Blue Devils are averaging 18.33 goals per game and allowing just six.
Maryland comes in at No. 2, Albany third and Denver fourth. The Blue Devils and fourth-ranked Pioneers will face off in the first top five showdown of the season this Friday at 5 p.m., on ESPNU. Yale rounds out the top five. Three of Duke’s 2018 opponents are in the top 10.
Headlining the Duke offense is senior attackman Justin Guterding with 27 points from 12 goals and 15 assists. He is coming off of a 17-point week, helping Duke to 18-6 and 19-8 victories over High Point and Jacksonville, respectively, to earn a spot on the USILA Team of the Week. The Garden City, N.Y., native has scored at least eight points in every game this season.
Guterding is climbing the Duke records book and is just 35 points shy of becoming the third Blue Devil to amass 300 career points. Guterding currently ranks fourth in career points, fifth in goals and sixth in assists.
The Blue Devils will face their toughest test of the young 2018 season, hosting No. 4 Denver Friday evening. Faceoff is set for 5 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium on ESPNU. Paul Carcaterra, Quint Kessenich and Anish Shroff will be calling the action.
