PALOS VERDES, Calif. – The fourth-ranked Duke women’s golf team closed play at the opening tournament of the 2018 campaign Tuesday afternoon in Palos Verdes Calif., with the Blue Devils turning in an eighth place finish at the 6,017-yard, par 71 Palos Verdes Golf Club.

All teams faced challenging conditions Tuesday with UCLA claiming team honors with a three-day ledger of 15-over, 867, while Alabama (871), Stanford (876), Arizona (883), Arizona State (884), Texas (885), Florida (890), Duke (893), Washington (894) and Southern California (900) rounding out the top 10 teams.

“It just wasn’t a very good day today,” commented Duke head coach Dan Brooks. “That’s just the way it is, plain and simple. The course was set up a little bit tougher today so you saw some pretty high numbers from a lot of teams, but that doesn’t explain 20 over for Duke. We’re better than that. It was the third day of seeing it. We’re going to probably chat with each player, everybody’s an individual in this game and just find what we can work on and see if we can do better next time.”

The Blue Devils posted rounds of 297, 292 and 304 to finish at 41-over, 893. It marked the lowest finish of the 2017-18 campaign for Duke, after carding a 59-under-par ledger over four tournaments in the fall.

“They all played a factor,” commented Brooks on the challenge presented by weather, course conditions and green speed. “The greens are very interesting, they’re fast downhill and can be pretty slow uphill. There’s a lot of slope on these greens. Sometimes you can’t see the slope, so it’s a challenging golf course, and it’s challenging for everybody. We didn’t handle it as well as our opponents did.”

Lilia Vu of UCLA, Olivia Mehaffey of Arizona State and Kaitlyn Papp of Texas tied for individual honors with a one-under, 212.

Freshman Miranda Wang paced the Blue Devils Tuesday in the final round as the Beijing, China native posted a two-over, 73, on her way to finishing tied 49th overall with a 228. Over her final two rounds, Wang turned in scores of 74 and 73.

Two-time National Player of the Year Leona Maguire finished the tournament as Duke’s top scorer with rounds of 75, 69 and 77 for an eight-over, 221, which was tied for 18th. Maguire was held to only one birdie in the final round, which equaled her round one as well. She entered the final day of play coming off registering five birdies and a two-under, 69, on Monday.

Jaravee Boonchant, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, had posted back-to-back rounds of 73, before closing with a 78. She finished tied 34th overall with a 224. Seeing action in her second tournament of the season, senior Lisa Maguire posted rounds of 74, 76 and 76 to finish tied 41st with a 226. She notched two birdies in her final round on holes No. 13 and No. 16.

With rounds of 75, 76 and 79 over the three days, sophomore Ana Belac closed the tournament tied 60th with a 230. She was limited to only one birdie on the day, which came on the 475-yard, par five fifth. Belac finished the week with a five-under-par ledger on par fives, which ranked tied second in the field.

Duke will be off until March 2-4 when the Blue Devils travel to Hilton Head, S.C., to compete in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Club.
