GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 18th-ranked Duke women’s basketball team fell to 23rd-ranked NC State, 51-45, Friday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Tournament. With the loss, the Blue Devils dropped to 22-8 overall.

Fifth-year senior duo of the “Splash Sisters” once again led the Blue Devil offense. Lexie Brown finished with a team-high 16 points while Rebecca Greenwell had 13.

With Brown’s two treys, the Suwanee, Ga., native moved into ninth on Duke’s single-season charts with 66 and exceeded the 600-point mark. Brown now owns 604 points for the season, which ranks eighth on Duke’s single-season charts. Brown also continued her three-point streak which is now 29-consecutive games and leads the ACC and ranks second nationally.

Greenwell started her 120th-career contest and is now tied fifth all-time as a Blue Devil, along with Mistie Bass and Jasmine Thomas.

Brown connected on her first three early at 9:13 in the first quarter and sunk another trey minutes later as Greenwell found her off a screen to give Duke an early lead. The Blue Devils had trouble holding possession of the ball and finished the first quarter with eight turnovers and shot only 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from the floor.

Brown opened the second frame with a fade-away jumper to notch double-digits in the early minutes of the second, while freshman Jade Williams picked up her first block the contest, good for her 39th of the season. Both squads went without a field goal for over four minutes as Duke’s last made-field-goal was at 8:15 in the second quarter. The Wolfpack outscored the Blue Devils 16-4 to lead 31-18 heading into halftime.

Brown led all scorers with 10 as Duke shot 7.1 percent (1-of-14) from the floor in the second 10 minutes.

The Blue Devils jumped out to an early 10-0 run in the third quarter as Greenwell connected on her only two treys of the game to pull within three. Senior Erin Mathias registered her first block of the afternoon and finished with two, good for her 35th of the season. The Blue Devils outscored the Wolfpack, 17-5, in the third quarter and only trailed, 36-35.

Brown tallied her seventh charge of the season as she stepped up for a big defensive stop in the fourth. Aislinn Konig of NC State notched her second three of the game at 7:58 to lead 42-37 before Brown collected her first and only steal of the game for an easy two in the paint. Sophomore Leaonna Odom allowed Duke to pull within two with under four minutes to play with a step-in jumper before Duke was held scoreless for over two minutes. The Blue Devils had several opportunities to take the lead down by two but were unable to connect to close the game.

The Blue Devils shot a season-low 27.5 percent (14-of-51) from the floor for the game and were outrebounded, 47-37, by the Wolfpack. The 45 points scored were tied for the second-fewest scored in the ACC Tournament by the Blue Devils and the fewest since the 1994 campaign.

Chelsea Nelson led the Wolfpack with 15 points and 22 rebounds, as the boards were an ACC Tournament record.

Duke will next await the NCAA Tournament selection show Monday, March 12 at 7 p.m.
