DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University freshman Miela Goodchild has been selected the Queensland Basketball League U-23 Youth Player of the Year. Goodchild, a 5-10 guard, guided her Townsville Flames squad to a 14-2 record from May through August.

Goodchild, a native of Queensland, Australia, averaged 18.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.5 steals over a span of 16 contests with the Flames. She scored a season-high 34 points against the Power as she hit 13-of-22 field goals and 4-of-7 from downtown. Goodchild also added 12 rebounds, four assists and two steals in 38 minutes in the outing.

She hit 34.9 percent of her three-pointers, while draining a total of 29 on the season. Goodchild notched 20 or more points seven different times.

It marked Goodchild’s second straight season playing in the Queensland Basketball League as she saw action with the Logan Thunder in 2017.

Goodchild was recently named to the Australian Gems squad that will represent her country at the FIBA Under-18 Asia Championships from Oct. 28 through Nov. 3. She is a two-time Basketball Queensland Player of the Year and Logan Basketball Junior Player of the Year. She competed in the 2018 U20 Australian Nationals, while helping her team to the silver medal.
