DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women’s basketball team has been working hard during the summer and preseason on and off the court in preparation for the 2018-19 season. With the change of NCAA rules over the last few years, the Blue Devils are allowed to hold team practices throughout the summer and fall.
Duke head coach Joanne P. McCallie takes advantage of these practice opportunities, but doesn’t officially feel like she tips off practice until she goes all-in on defense, which will happen Wednesday, Oct. 10.
The Blue Devils have been preseason ranked in a couple of magazines – Street & Smith’s (No. 19) and Lindy’s Sports Annual (No. 21).
McCallie, entering her 12th year with the program, is coming off leading Duke to a 24-9 overall record in 2017-18 and will feature a much different look this season following the graduation of two of the Blue Devils’ all-time great scorers – Rebecca Greenwell and Lexie Brown. The high-scoring tandem combined to average 33.3 points a game last year and scored a staggering 3,137 points over their Duke careers.
Gorecki, a product of Palatine, Ill., showed she was one of the top guards in the ACC a year ago as she averaged 17.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.8 steals over a span of 11 contests. She totaled 20 or more points in four of those games. Gorecki, a deadly three-point shooter, became the first Duke player to notch seven or more three-pointers in back-to-back games.
A native of Lompoc, Calif., Odom was one of the best players in the 2018 NCAA Tournament averaging 21.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in three contests. She collected a game-high 22 points, eight rebounds and four assists against top-seeded Connecticut, while registering a career-high 25 points versus Belmont. The 6-2 Odom is one of the most athletic players in the nation.
Duke also welcomes back a number of other very talented student-athletes including Mikayla Boykin, Jade Williams, Kyra Lambert, Faith Suggs, Jayda Adams, Madison Treece, Sofia Roma and Emily Schubert. The Blue Devil will get a boost from four incoming freshmen as well that should provide an immediate impact – Rayah Craig, Onome Akinbode-James, Uchenna Nwoke and Miela Goodchild.
The Blue Devils will host their annual Blue/White scrimmage Sunday, Oct. 21 and then welcome Alaska Anchorage on Sunday, Nov. 4, before opening the regular season Sunday, Nov. 11 at Northwestern.
All home games are played in the historic Cameron Indoor Stadium. For ticket information, contact the Duke Ticket Office at (919) 681-2583 or 1-877-375-3853. You can also purchase season tickets online at www.GoDuke.com.
