DURHAM, N.C. – The Los Angeles Angels drafted Duke left-handed pitcher James Ziemba in the 22nd round (No. 655 overall) of the 2017 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft Wednesday.
Ziemba is the second Blue Devil taken in the 2017 MLB Draft, joining teammate Justin Bellinger (Cincinnati Reds, 22nd round). In addition, Ziemba is the 13th Blue Devil and 11th Duke pitcher drafted under head coach Chris Pollard.
A 37th round (No. 1,097 overall) pick of the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2016 MLB Draft, Ziemba returned to Durham and posted career highs in appearances (22), innings (48.1) and strikeouts (45) this past season. Ziemba saw time both as a starter and out of the bullpen while also serving as team captain.
In three seasons with the Blue Devils, the 6-10 left-hander has posted a 4.96 ERA in 53 career appearances. He struck out 95 batters in 85.1 career innings.
