DURHAM, N.C. – Duke baseball signee Wil Hoyle was chosen by the Oakland Athletics in the 38th round (No. 1131) of the 2017 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft Wednesday.
A middle infielder from Durham, N.C., Hoyle was the first Blue Devil signee drafted in 2017. Hoyle was one of two Duke signees drafted in 2017, along with outfielder Steve Mann (Detroit Tigers, 38th round).
This past season, Hoyle earned Rawlings-Perfect Game All-America honorable mention accolades as well as Atlantic All Region Second Team distinction. Hoyle batted .408 as a junior and .360 as a senior at Charles E. Jordan High School in Durham. The speedy second baseman swiped a combined 50 bases the past two years as well.
