DURHAM, N.C. – A local produce from Jordan High School in Durham, middle infielder Wil Hoyle is set to join the Duke baseball program in the fall of 2017.
Hoyle became the first 2017 Blue Devil signee taken in this year's Major League Baseball Draft after the Oakland Athletics selected Hoyle in the 38th round (No. 1,131 overall).
"Wil had a great senior year," said head coach Chris Pollard. "He's a very versatile middle infielder and with his arm strength, he can play either side of the bag. Wil's also a switch hitter who runs very well on the base paths."
As a senior at Jordan High School, Hoyle garnered Rawlings-Perfect Game All-America honorable mention accolades and Atlantic All Region Second Team distinction as well as 2016-17 Williamson PAC 6 Male Athlete of the Year honors. An elite level defender, Hoyle also hit .408 his junior season and .360 his final high school year. In addition, the speedy infielder swiped a combined 50 stolen bases the past two seasons.
A two-time team captain, Hoyle also excels academically and received the Tom Suiter Extra Effort award on May 11, 2017. He is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the French Honor Society and Tri-M Honor Society.
Hoyle is part of Duke's 11-member 2017 signing class that includes 1B Chris Crabtree, LHP Matt Dockman, RHP Thomas Girard, RHP/SS Bryce Jarvis, INF Joey Loperfido, OF Steve Mann, RHP Josh Nifong, C Michael Rothenberg, RHP Toma Shigaki-Than and SS Tyler Wardwell.
