WAREHAM, Mass. – Duke junior outfielders Griffin Conine and Jimmy Herron were named MVPs of the West Division and East Division all-star teams in front of 7,163 fans at Saturday’s Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star game at Spillane Field. The Duke duo is the first pair of college teammates to earn all-star MVP honors in the same season.
Herron delivered the go-ahead two-run double to help the East secure a 5-3 victory, while Conine went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer for the West.
Selected by the Yankees in the 31st round of the 2017 MLB Draft, Herron is hitting .371 with 11 stolen bases to lead the Cape in batting this summer as a member of the Orleans Firebirds. Starting in center field for the all-star game, Herron battled Clemson lefthander Mitchell Miller before delivering a two-run double that proved the difference in the game.
Earlier in the game, Conine turned on Kent State righthander Joey Murray’s fastball and send it over the right field fence. Conine is hitting .309 this summer with a league best eight home runs with the Cotuit Kettleers.
Junior shortstop Zack Kone also appeared in the Cape Cod All-Star game, spending the summer with Cotuit alongside Conine. Sophomore lefthander Graeme Stinson ranks fifth in the league with 29 strikeouts over 15.1 innings with Orleans while junior catcher Chris Proctor is hitting .300 with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks.
