DURHAM, N.C. – For the fourth time Wednesday, a Duke Blue Devil was selected in the 2018 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft, as senior third baseman and relief pitcher Jack Labosky was taken in the 22nd round (660th overall pick) by the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Clovis, Calif., native becomes the sixth Blue Devil selected in the 2018 MLB Draft, marking the most in program history since a record seven were taken in 2009. Labosky joins Griffin Conine (Toronto Blue Jays, second round, 52nd pick), Jimmy Herron (Chicago Cubs, third round, 98th pick), Chris Proctor (Detroit Tigers, 13th round, 375th pick), Zack Kone (Pittsburgh Pirates, 13th round, 384th pick) and Ethan DeCaster (Detroit Tigers, 18th round, 525th pick) as Blue Devils to be drafted in 2018.

It has been a banner week for Labosky, as the senior picked up Baseball America All-America Third Team honors, becoming the 11th All-American in Duke history and the first since Marcus Stroman in 2012.

In addition to starting every game at third base this season, Labosky has also taken the mound for 21 relief appearances as Duke’s primary closer. Named to the 2018 NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List, he has allowed three runs in 24 relief appearances, posting a 3-0 record and 0.71 ERA over 38.0 innings while tying the ACC’s third-highest total in saves (10). Named to the 2018 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Watch List, Labosky is also batting .234 with 12 doubles, seven home run and 40 runs batted in.

Labosky holds the program’s career saves record with 18 and is the 20th Blue Devil to take the mound in 70 or more career games. He is also the 18th Blue Devil with 20 or more career home runs (21) and ranks in the program’s top 25 in nine career categories.
