DURHAM, N.C. – A record-breaking year for the Duke baseball team continued Wednesday as the seventh Blue Devil was taken in the 2018 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. Senior left-handed pitcher Mitch Stallings was chosen by the Atlanta Braves in the 30th round with the 892nd overall pick. Stallings is the seventh Blue Devil selected in this year’s draft, tying the 2009 record for Duke picks in a single draft year.
Stallings joins Griffin Conine (Toronto Blue Jays, second round, 52nd pick), Jimmy Herron (Chicago Cubs, third round, 98th pick), Chris Proctor (Detroit Tigers, 13th round, 375th pick), Zack Kone (Pittsburgh Pirates (13th round, 384th pick), Ethan DeCaster (Detroit Tigers, 18th round, 525th pick) and Jack Labosky (Tampa Bay Rays, 22nd round, 660th pick) as Blue Devils to be drafted in 2018.
A senior from Atlanta, Ga., Stallings has appeared on the mound in 17 games this spring, owning a 4-5 record and 6.01 ERA in 88.1 innings pitched. Stallings has yielded 59 earned runs while striking out 987 and issuing 41 walks.
During last weekend’s NCAA Athens Regional, Stallings earned All-Tournament Team accolades after throwing 11.1 innings, including 7.0 in the clinching victory versus Georgia. In the final contest, Stallings got the start and scattered seven hits and two walks to go along with six strikeouts as the Blue Devils advanced to the first super regional in program history.
