DURHAM, N.C. – Freshman left-hander Aaron Beasley pitched five strong innings to lead Blue to a 4-1 victory in the opener of Duke’s annual Fall World Series Friday at Jack Coombs Field.
After surrendering a leadoff double to senior Kennie Taylor to start the game, Beasley settled in and pitched five complete, allowing only an Erikson Nichols infield single the rest of the way. The Durham, N.C., native struck out five and did not give up a walk.
With the tying run at the plate in the top of the seventh, Zack Hersh coaxed a one-out groundball to initiate the game-ending double play, earning the save in the process.
Junior outfielder Chase Cheek went 1-for-3 with a walk, two stolen bases and two runs scored while sophomore second baseman Joey Loperfido added a hit, two walks and a stolen base for Blue in the win.
The second Fall World Series game is slated for an 11 a.m., start Saturday, November 17 at Jack Coombs Field.
