DURHAM, N.C. –Junior outfielder Chase Cheek went 3-for-5 with two stolen bases and Blue used a three-run fifth to pull away from Black in the Fall World Series finale Sunday at Jack Coombs Field. Blue completed the sweep with a third-straight 4-1 victory.
Three Blue pitchers – Thomas Girard, Kyle Salley and Al Pesto – combined to limit Black to one run on three hits and one walk, striking out four over seven innings of work. Girard went three innings, giving up one run on one hit and a walk with a pair of strikeouts.
Redshirt freshman Wil Hoyle led Black offensively, going 2-for-2 with a triple. Freshman Cooper Stinson continued his strong fall, pitching well for Black. The 6-6 rookie gave up one run on three hits over 3.0 innings with four strikeouts and no walks.
Duke now transitions into its offseason workouts before the start of the spring season. The Blue Devils open the 2019 campaign at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park February 15-17 against Lehigh.
