DURHAM, N.C. – With the start of the 2019 season quickly approaching, head coach Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are pleased to welcome the most recent recruiting class. Among the 12 newest Blue Devils is right-hander Marcus Johnson from Fontana, Calif.
“Marcus is an incredibly athletic right-handed pitcher out of southern California,” said Pollard. “He’s an elite strike thrower, a 75-80 percent strike-command guy with his fastball. He’s really starting to develop some velocity, but he has a tremendously projectable frame at 6-6. Marcus is also a very accomplished high school basketball player who can jump out of the gym”
As a junior in 2017, Johnson led Etiwanda High School to a Division 2 CIF Championship. The Eagles went 27-3 behind his 8-2 record and 1.98 ERA. In 11 starts this past season, Johnson posted five complete games and one shutout, going 7-3 with a 2.95 ERA. He tossed a two-hitter in Etiwanda’s 2-0 victory over Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks in the opening round of the Boras Classic, earning SoCal Prep Boys Athlete of the Week for his efforts.
A 2018 Perfect Game All-America High Honorable Mention selection, Johnson is rated among PG’s top 500 overall prospects and No. 179 RHP in the 2019 recruiting class. In addition, the organization also lists Johnson as the No. 84 overall and No. 25 right-hander in the state of California.
Johnson is part of Duke’s 12-member 2019 recruiting class along with LHP Michael Foltz (Myrtle Beach, N.C.), 1B/OF Britt Fuller (Charlotte, N.C.), INF/RHP Thomas Keehn (Highland, Md.), LHP Clark Klitenic (Bethesda, Md.), C Chad Knight (Westport, Conn.), INF Grant Norris (Somerset, Pa.), INF Graham Pauley (Milton, Ga.), RHP Billy Seidl (Wellesley, Mass.), OF Sam Siani (Glendale, Pa.), RHP Colten Smith (Colmar, Pa.) and RHP Henry Williams (Darien, Conn.).
