DURHAM, N.C. – Head coach Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are thrilled to announce the signing of shortstop Tyler Wardwell to a National Letter of Intent. The switch-hitting shortstop from Cincinnati joins the Blue Devils in the fall of 2017 after graduating from La Salle High School.
“Tyler has surprising power from both sides of the plate for his size,” said Pollard. “He’s also a very smooth infielder with plus hands and a plus arm at short. Tyler’s certainly a good runner and his ability to generate offense from both sides of the plate makes him a very versatile commodity at the ACC level.”
A 2016 Perfect Game Underclass High Honorable Mention pick, Wardwell hit .404 while leading the league in hits and doubles as a junior at La Salle. The four-year letterwinner has garnered all-league and all-city accolades.
In addition, Perfect Game rated Wardwell among the top 500 overall prospects and No. 143 shortstop in the 2017 recruiting class. The organization also tabbed Wardwell the 10th best overall prospect and No. 2 shortstop from the state of Ohio.
Wardwell is part of Duke’s 10-member 2017 signing class. GoDuke.com is set to release details on each of the Blue Devils’ 2017 recruiting class members over the coming weeks.
