DURHAM, N.C. – Head coach Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are elated to announce the signing of infielder Joey Loperfido to a National Letter of Intent. The Haddonfield, N.J., native completes his senior year at Haddonfield Memorial High School before joining the Blue Devils in the fall of 2017.
A versatile middle infielder, the left-handed hitting Loperfido could also see time in the Duke outfield.
“Joey has the chance to stick at a lot of different spots on the field,” said Pollard. “He’s a very versatile middle infielder but we can envision Joey playing at third and in the outfield. We witnessed him make a really athletic play on a ball in left field during the recruiting process. Joey certainly has the advanced left-handed bat and plus speed. His ability to play several positions on the field gives him the chance to come in and play very early.”
The 2016 Perfect Game Underclass High Honorable Mention pick hit .431 his junior season, leading South Jersey in triples (6) while accruing 28 RBI and 26 runs scored. Loperfido batted over .400 in each of the past two seasons, garnering All-Colonial Conference and All-South Jersey honors in the process.
In addition, Perfect Game rated Loperfido as the No. 436 overall prospect and No. 76 shortstop in the 2017 recruiting class. The organization also tabbed Loperfido the 13th best overall prospect and No. 2 shortstop from the state of New Jersey.
Loperfido is part of Duke’s 10-member 2017 signing class. GoDuke.com is set to release details on each of the Blue Devils’ 2017 recruiting class members over the coming weeks.
