Last weekend at No. 9 Georgia, Duke (44-16) used four home runs and stellar pitching performances to top the Bulldogs 8-4 in game seven of the NCAA Athens Regional. The Blue Devils dropped their first game of the regional, falling 6-0 to Troy before storming back through the losers’ bracket. Duke trailed Campbell 8-1 entering the seventh inning before winning 16-8. The Blue Devils completed the comeback by topping Troy 15-6 and downing Georgia 8-5 and 8-4.
In the deciding contest versus Georgia, Griffin Conine blasted two home runs while Zack Kone and Jimmy Herron had one each. On short rest, senior Mitch Stallings pitched seven complete before turning the game over to Jack Labosky for the six-out save.
Earlier this week, the Blue Devils tied the program record for Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft selections with seven. Conine (Toronto Blue Jays, second round, 52nd pick), Herron (Chicago Cubs, third round, 98th pick), Chris Proctor (Detroit Tigers, 13th round, 375th pick), Kone (Pittsburgh Pirates (13th round, 384th pick), Ethan DeCaster (Detroit Tigers, 18th round, 525th pick), Labosky (Tampa Bay Rays, 22nd round, 660th pick) and Stallings (Atlanta Braves, 30th round, 892nd pick) were all chosen.
