DURHAM, N.C. – Following a team vote, the Duke baseball team elected seniors Hunter Davis and Kennie Taylor as the squad’s 2019 captains. In addition, the Blue Devils appointed freshmen Rudy Maxwell and Matt Stinebiser, sophomore Joey Loperfido and junior Chase Cheek to the leadership council along with the two captains.

Loperfido, Cheek and Davis all served on the team’s leadership council a season ago, and have each served in a leadership capacity over the course of their entire careers at Duke.

“We are proud to announce our 2019 leadership council and team captains as we head into the two-week mark until we open up with Lehigh,” said head coach Chris Pollard. “We very much appreciate the thoughtfulness that our team put into this process. I appreciate the fact that we’ve got leaders throughout our program, and that every member of this program—every player, every coach and every support coach—has a role to play in leadership. With that being said, the team did a great job of electing a group of guys who will serve to be their voice and will do that very well.

The program instituted the leadership council in 2015 in order to take advantage of the team’s diverse group of leaders. The concept was originally inspired through conversations with former Blue Devil and current Pittsburgh Pirate Director of Minor League Operations Larry Broadway.

“I couldn’t be happier for Kennie Taylor and Hunter Davis, two guys that have invested so much into our program over these past four years,” Pollard added. “They are guys who have been great representatives for Duke baseball on and off the field, and guys that embody the servant leadership principle that we espouse to as a program. Our program and this year’s team is in good hands, and I look forward to working with these guys as we embark on the 2019 season.”

The Blue Devils open the 2019 season February 15-17, welcoming Lehigh to Durham Bulls Athletic Park for a three-game series.
