DURHAM, N.C. – With the 2019 season opener less than one week away, head coach Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are excited to announce right-handed pitcher Henry Williams as part of the Blue Devils’ most recent recruiting class.
“Henry Williams oozes projectability,” said Pollard. “He’s 6-5 and has a loose long frame. He’s been up to 91 miles per hour and is an advanced strike thrower. He’s very athletic on the mound, and is a high school shortstop. His delivery is loose and athletic like a Jack Labosky type. We also like his breaking ball.”
A three-year letterwinner at Darien High School, Williams comes to Durham from Darien, Conn. Williams enjoyed an impressive junior campaign at DHS, earning four wins and one save across nine appearances, including seven starts. He posted a 1.30 ERA over 43 innings of work, notching 68 strikeouts and one complete game. Williams was named to the 2018 All Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference (FCIAC) First Team, and was selected as the FCIAC Sportsperson of the Year for 2017-18.
Williams is regarded as a top 500 prospect by Perfect Game, and earned Underclass All-American Honorable Mention honors in 2018. In addition, the organization also lists Williams as the No. 12 overall prospect and the third-best right-handed pitcher in the state of Connecticut.
A two-sport athlete, Williams also competed in basketball, lettering all four years of his prep career as a small forward/shooting guard and serving as a senior team captain. He is a member of the National Latin Honor Society, and serves a YMCA Camp Jewell youth counselor.
Williams is part of Duke’s 12-member 2019 recruiting class along with LHP Michael Foltz (Myrtle Beach, N.C.), 1B/OF Britt Fuller (Charlotte, N.C.), RHP Marcus Johnson (Fontana, Calif.), INF/RHP Thomas Keehn (Highland, Md.), LHP Clark Klitenic (Bethesda, Md.), C Chad Knight (Westport, Conn.), INF Grant Norris (Somerset, Pa.), INF Graham Pauley (Milton, Ga.), OF Sam Siani (Glendale, Pa.), RHP Billy Seidl (Wellesley, Mass.) and RHP Colten Smith (Colmar, Pa.).
