DURHAM, N.C. – Following a weekend sweep of Bucknell, Duke faces crosstown foe North Carolina Central for the second time in seven days. The Blue Devils and the Eagles take the field for the second game of a 2018 home-and-home series at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 27 at the Durham Athletic Park.
Duke (5-2) enters Tuesday on a four-game win streak after defeating NCCU, 8-2, Wednesday, Feb. 21 at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park before sweeping Bucknell in a three-game home series. Shortstop Zack Kone had a tremendous weekend at the plate, going 7-for-11 and slugging 1.273 with two home runs, eight RBI and four runs scored.
In addition to Kone’s big weekend, freshman Joey Loperfido and Michael Rothenberg have enjoyed strong starts to their collegiate careers. Loperfido has started all seven games at first base and owns a .333 batting average with a double, triple and eight RBI, while Rothenberg is batting .364 with a pair of homers.
NCCU (5-2) is coming off a home sweep of NJIT. Senior Andrew Valichka earned MEAC Player of the Week honors Monday after slugging 1.250 with two home runs, two doubles and six RBI.
Duke freshman lefty Matt Dockman makes his first career start Tuesday, facing NCCU RHP Nick Caregnato.
