DURHAM, N.C. – Fresh off a series sweep of Cornell, Duke takes on Longwood in its final midweek matchup before diving into ACC play this coming weekend. The Blue Devils and the Lancers meet at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park for 4 p.m., first pitch Wednesday, March 7.
Duke (9-2, 0-0 ACC) has won eight straight games, including series sweeps against Bucknell and Cornell as well as two midweek victories over North Carolina Central.
A pair of freshman – Michael Rothenberg and Joey Loperfido – currently lead the Blue Devil offense, batting .407 and .375, respectively. Junior Jimmy Herron had a tremendous weekend at the plate, hitting .545 with five extra base hits against the Big Red.
During Duke’s eight-game win streak, the Blue Devil pitching staff has recorded a 2.50 ERA while limiting opposing batters to a .198 average. Duke’s bullpen has been particularly effective the past eight games, compiling a 1.82 ERA over 34.2 innings with 47 strikeouts compared to 17 walks.
Longwood (3-7, 0-0 Big South) takes on North Carolina Central Tuesday before battling the Blue Devils Wednesday. The Lancers most recently dropped a road series at USC Upstate, winning the series finale to avoid the sweep. Jawan McCallister leads Longwood with a .265 batting average through the Lancers’ first 10 contests.
Duke freshman Bryce Jarvis is set to make his first career start against the Lancers. In three appearances this season, Jarvis owns a 4.50 ERA with 10 strikeouts in 4.0 innings.
Admission to Tuesday’s game is free of charge. Chris Edwards is on the call for the ACC Network Extra, which is set to broadcast the game via ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.
Following Wednesday’s game, Duke opens ACC play against Virginia Friday-Sunday, March 9-11 at the DBAP.
