DURHAM, N.C. – A program four years in the making will make its debut in late September, as Duke softball will host NC State to open its inaugural fall season on Saturday, Sept. 30 at the Duke Softball Stadium.
The free admission contest is set for a 4 p.m. ET first pitch and will be the first competition for the program since its creation in 2013. Head coach Marissa Young, who was hired in July 2015, is excited to get her roster of 18 Blue Devils on the field for the first time since taking the job two years ago.
“I know that most teams view the Fall as just the offseason but for our program the Fall means much more,” Young said. “September 30th isn’t just a practice game. It’s the first time in Duke Softball history that Team One takes the field to compete. The first game in our stadium, first time on the field in uniform in front of our fans means so much. It’s just the beginning, but one we are excited for this game and working hard to be a team that the Duke family will be proud of!”
“We cannot wait to get to Sept. 30 and we want a packed house as we take on the Wolfpack.”
Fans in attendance will have the chance to win numerous prizes, plus meet the coaches and players and get autographs following the game. A full promotional schedule for the contest will be announced closer to the game.
The Blue Devils will play a total of eight fall contests, with six of them coming within the friendly confines of their home stadium. After the fall opener, the Blue Devils will travel to Elon for a 1 p.m. matchup on Sunday, Oct. 1. Duke will then host the next five at home: Friday, Oct. 6 vs. Lenoir Rhyne (6:30 p.m.), Saturday, Oct. 14 vs. North Georgia (3:30 & 5:30 p.m.), Thursday, Oct. 19 vs. NCCU (5 p.m.) and Saturday, Oct. 21 vs. Elon (5 p.m.).
Fall action will wrap up with a Thursday, Oct. 26 contest in Lynchburg, Va., as the Blue Devils face off against Liberty at 6:30 p.m.
Duke’s 18-player roster is comprised of 12 freshmen (five redshirt), two grad students, two juniors and two sophomores (one redshirt).
