DURHAM, N.C. – After four years of work in building the Duke softball program, head coach Marissa Young and her squad of Blue Devils will finally hit the field Saturday, opening their first official team practice at the Duke Softball Stadium.

The squad of 18 has gone through individual workouts for the past three weeks in preparation for their first full team practice. Individuals have given the Blue Devils the opportunity to get some work in at their new home, getting on the field and in the batting cages at the Duke Softball Stadium.

“We’re really excited to get out there and finally practice together as a team,” Young said. “Everyone passed their run test and is ready to roll. It will be good to see our players go through drills as a team and also gauge where everyone stands as we get closer to actual competition. Overall, we’re just really excited to be closer to actually playing."

Saturday’s practice comes just 14 days before the Blue Devils are set to open their fall season against the NC State Wolkpack on Sept. 30. First pitch from the Duke Softball Stadium is set for 4 p.m. ET, with free admission to all fans. Duke will play a total of nine fall contests, with six of them coming within the friendly confines of their home stadium. After the fall opener, the Blue Devils will travel to Elon for a 1 p.m. matchup on Sunday, Oct. 1. Duke will then host the next five at home: Friday, Oct. 6 vs. Lenoir Rhyne (6:30 p.m.), Saturday, Oct. 14 vs. North Georgia (3:30 & 5:30 p.m.), Thursday, Oct. 19 vs. NCCU (5 p.m.) and Saturday, Oct. 21 vs. Elon (5 p.m.). Fall action will wrap up with a Thursday, Oct. 26 contest in Lynchburg, Va., as the Blue Devils face off against Liberty at 6:30 p.m.

Duke’s 18-player roster is comprised of 12 freshmen (five redshirt), two grad students, two juniors and two sophomores (one redshirt).
