BOCA RATON, Fla. - In their final contest of the opening weekend, the Duke Blue Devils (2-3) fell in an extra-innings showdown against the Boston Terriers, 7-4, Saturday morning at the FAU Softball Stadium.

After a scoreless first two innings, Boston struck first thanks to a single to left, giving the Terriers a 1-0 lead. Duke would respond in its next at-bat, as Jameson Kavel and Rachel Abboud drove home runs to give the Blue Devils at 2-1 lead. Jazmine Moreno set up Kavel’s RBI double with a one-out bunt single. Abboud then drove home Kavel with a well-hit single to center.

Boston tacked on a run in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 3-2 advantage, but that would be short lived as a Dominique Salinas single tied things up at 3-3 and eventually send the game into extras. Back-to-back singles from Raine Wilson and Amelia Wiercioch would set up Salinas’ RBI single to down the left field line. The Blue Devils would put runners on second and third later in the inning, but were kept at bay by the Terriers.

With the international tiebreaker in effect, Boston opened up the eighth with a sac bunt to put the runner 60 feet from home, eventually bringing her home on a fielder’s choice. Consecutive errors from the Blue Devils allowed three more runs to score, giving Boston a 7-4 advantage. Duke responded with one in the bottom half thanks to a Boston error, but could not complete the comeback, falling 7-4 to the Terriers.

The Blue Devils willl return to action Friday, Feb. 16 - Sunday, Feb. 18, hosting the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at the Duke Softball Stadium. Duke will face Penn State Friday, Feb 16 at 5 p.m. ET and again Saturday, Feb. 17 at 2:30 p.m. The Blue Devils will cap their Saturday with a 5 p.m., showdown against Purdue before taking on the Boilermakers Sunday, Feb. 18 at 12:30 p.m.
