DURHAM, N.C. – For the first time in program history, the Duke softball program will head outside the United States as the Blue Devils will take part in the 2019 Puerto Vallarta College Challenge Feb. 7-10, Triple Crown Sports announced on Friday.
The Blue Devils will take part in the first session of the tournament, which also includes Baylor, BYU, Liberty, South Carolina, Washington and ACC foes Notre Dame and North Carolina. The first session has seven teams that reached the 2018 NCAA Tournament, including Women’s College World Series finalist Washington and Super Regional participant South Carolina.
Duke will open the week on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 9:30 p.m. ET against Notre Dame, a team the Blue Devils took two of three from in South Bend, Ind., last season for the first ACC road series win in program history. The Blue Devils will face another familiar foe in their second game as they battle South Carolina on Friday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. The Gamecocks took the first meeting between the two squads last season, 6-1, in Columbia, S.C.
The weekend will conclude on Friday, Feb. 9 with two contests. Duke will face Liberty at 4 p.m. and close out the tournament against Washington at 9:30 p.m.
Information on fan packages for the 2019 Puerto Vallarta College Challenge will be released soon.
Duke is coming off an impressive inaugural season that saw it rack up 29 wins and earn the No. 7 seed in the 2018 ACC Tournament. The 29 victories finished as the fifth most amongst first-year ACC programs. Also adding to the Blue Devils’ impressive first season were the three conference honors it reeled in, as Raine Wilson was named All-ACC First Team while Rachel Abboud and Peyton St. George were named ACC All-Freshman Team.
