DURHAM, N.C. – Brianna Butler turned in a dominating performance from the circle to lead the Duke Blue Devils (25-27) to a 4-1 victory against the East Carolina Pirates (21-26) Tuesday to close out the final home game of the 2019 regular season.
Butler (9-3) threw 6.0 scoreless innings, tossing four strikeouts and allowing just two hits to lead the Blue Devils to their 14th home win of the year. Marissa Gagliano and Kristina Foreman each drove in two runs to spearhead a Duke offense that tallied nine hits.
The Blue Devils got on the board early thanks to a two-run bomb from Foreman, her sixth homer of the season. Duke tacked on two more runs in the fourth thanks to a two-run single from Gagliano, her second hit of the season. Caroline Jacobsen and Reilly Metzger each tallied two-out singles, followed by a walk issued to Butler to load the bases for Gagliano, who ripped a single to right center to push the lead to 4-0.
ECU would get one run back in the seventh, leading off the inning with a triple to right and bringing home the run with a groundout to second. Despite the run, Duke was able to keep the Pirates at bay and pull out a 4-1 win.
Gagliano, Jacobsen and Metzger each tallied two-hit games to lead the Blue Devil offense. Jacobsen’s single in the second extended her career-long hitting streak to seven-straight games, while Deja Davis tied her career-long hitting streak at six-consecutive contests.
Duke closes out the regular season this weekend at No. 6 Florida State. The series is set to begin on Friday, April 26 at 6 p.m. ET, with Saturday set for a 1 p.m., start and Sunday slated to begin at noon. All three games will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
