TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A pair of home runs in the third broke a 1-1 tie and propelled the No. 6 Florida State Seminoles (45-8, 16-5 ACC) to an 8-1 victory against the Duke Blue Devils (25-30, 11-13 ACC) to close out the regular season Sunday at JoAnne Graf Field.
Duke struck first in the contest, with Marissa Gagliano getting things started with a bunt single on the second pitch of the game. Deja Davis recorded her 61st hit of the season to put two on before a wild pitch pushed runners to second and third. A failed pickoff attempt of Gagliano at third allowed the senior to score, making it 1-0 for the Blue Devils.
That lead would not last long, as the Seminoles sent a 2-1 pitch over the wall in right to lead off the home half of the inning. Tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the third, FSU opened things up with three runs on back-to-back homers to take a 4-1 advantage.
Florida State added three more in the fifth off four hits, extending its lead to 7-1. The Seminoles would add one more in the bottom of the sixth, pushing it to an 8-1 lead they would hold until the end to secure the series sweep.
Gagliano topped the Blue Devils with her seventh multi-hit game of the season, finishing 2-for-3 with a run scored. Davis, Jameson Kavel, Kristina Foreman and Raine Wilson rounded out Duke’s offensive performance with a hit a piece. Peyton St. George (8-7) received the start for the Blue Devils, going 2.2 innings and striking out a pair of batters. Amelia Wiercioch and Brianna Butler closed out the final 3.1 innings in the circle.
Duke will now await its ACC Tournament fate with the regular season in the books. The Blue Devils have clinched a spot in the 10-team field and will learn its seed after the final batch of ACC series take place next weekend. The 2019 ACC Tournament will take place May 8-11 in Tallahassee, Fla., at JoAnne Graf Field.
