DURHAM, N.C. – Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Kevin White, Senior Deputy Director of Athletics Dr. Chris Kennedy and head coach Marissa Young headlined a groundbreaking ceremony for Duke’s new softball stadium on Monday morning on the school’s East Campus. The stadium will sit adjacent to Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium, which serves as the home of Duke’s field hockey program.

“This is a historic moment for the program, athletic department and Duke University,” White said.

Young, who earned All-America honors three times at the University of Michigan and was named the 2002 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and 2003 Big Ten Player of the Year, was hired as the program’s first head coach on July 29, 2015. Assistant coaches Kate Kantor and Amanda Chidester joined the staff earlier this year.

The Blue Devils are set to open varsity play during the 2017-18 academic year. Eleven current ACC schools sponsor softball including Boston College, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, North Carolina, NC State, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

The Duke program is scheduled to allot the NCAA maximum 12 scholarships within the first four years of competition. Currently, Duke fields a club softball team that doesn’t provide scholarships or compete on the varsity level -- an NCAA Associate Club sport that competes against similar teams from other universities.
