DURHAM, N.C. – A late rally fell just short on Sunday for the Duke Blue Devils (24-27, 11-10 ACC), as they dropped a 5-4 decision to the NC State Wolfpack (25-22, 6-12 ACC) to wrap the series at the Duke Softball Stadium.
Trailing 5-2 heading into the final frame, the Blue Devils pulled two back to make it a one-run game thanks to a two-run single from Kristina Foreman. However, the Wolfpack were able to hold on to capture the series victory.
The Blue Devils struck first in the series rubber match, plating two runs in the bottom of the second. Foreman led things off with a single to right, followed by a walk to Raine Wilson. After a wild pitch pushed the runners to second and third, Jameson Kavel pushed home the first run on a sac fly to foul territory in right. The next at-bat brought home the game’s second run, as a Caroline Jacobsen single through the left side to score Wilson and make it 2-0.
That lead did not last long, as the Wolfpack tallied three home runs in the top of the third to go ahead 5-2. Both sides would go scoreless over the next three frames until the Blue Devils’ two runs in the seventh.
Duke tallied seven hits on the day, led by Foreman’s two-hit, two-RBI day. Jacobsen extended her career-long hitting streak to six-straight games with her second inning single.
Brianna Butler earned the start on Sunday, going 2.0 innings. Shelby Walters (5-13) came in for the final 5.0 innings, striking out five.
The Blue Devils return on Tuesday, April 23 for their home finale, hosting East Carolina. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
