The Series History
- Duke and Jacksonville are meeting for the ninth time since the inaugural matchup in 2010. The Blue Devils are 8-0 and defeated the Dolphins 19-8 last season. In the eight victories, Duke’s average margin of victory is 8.9 goals.
- This will be Duke’s third game in Jacksonville. The Blue Devils traveled to the Dolphins in Jacksonville’s first season in 2010 and again in 2016.

Mentor vs Mentee
- The head coaches of Saturday’s matchup has a unique connection. Duke head coach John Danowski served as the U.S. Men’s National Team coach this past summer at the FIL World Championships. Jacksonville leader John Galloway was the goaltender for the gold-medal winning squad.
- Prior to coaching at Jacksonville, Galloway served as a volunteer assistant coach for Danowski and the Blue Devils and then as an assistant coach for former Duke assistant Chris Gabrielli at Providence.
Last Time Out
- High Point senior goaltender Tim Troutner Jr. made 19 saves and the Panthers outscored Duke 7-3 in the fourth quarter to upset the No. 2 Blue Devils 13-9 Wednesday night.
- All square at 6-6 heading into the fourth quarter, Duke’s Reilly Walsh gave the Blue Devils the 7-6 lead, but High Point responded in a big way with six unanswered over a span of 4:40 to ice the victory with a 12-7 lead.
- Jake Seau continued his red-hot start to 2019 with two goals and three points. He has seven points on the season, just four shy of matching his total from the three previous seasons.
- In goal, Turner Uppgren made 10 saves, including six in the first quarter. Brian Smyth was 13-of-25 at the faceoff and picked up six ground balls.
Last Time We Met
- Headlined by Justin Guterding’s four tallies, five Blue Devils scored multiple goals as No. 2 Duke defeated visiting Jacksonville, 19-8 last season in Durham.
- The Blue Devils led 9-2 after the first quarter and extended it to 15-4 after three periods. Joe Robertson had a hat trick. Greg Pelton scooped up eight ground balls and Danny Fowler had four saves in 30 minutes in goal.
Looking At Duke
- Duke, the preseason No. 2 team behind reigning NCAA Champion Yale, heads to Jacksonville looking to bounce back after a loss to unranked High Point. The Blue Devils feature a wealth of experience both offensively and defensively, including All-Americans Brad Smith, Cade Van Raaphorst and JT Giles-Harris.
- Jake Seau is Duke's top scorer with seven points, while sophomore Joe Robertson has six points. Senior Brad Smith, the Blue Devils’ top returning scorer has only played a few plays after suffering a preseason injury. Joey Manown has four goals and an assist after making his season debut in the loss to High Point.
- A member of the first midfield with Seau, Reilly Walsh has three goals and five points overall. Duke’s second midfield has five points.
- On defense, the duo of All-Americans Van Raaphorst and Giles-Harris will anchor the close defense along with senior Jack Fowler who earned his first career start against Furman. Graduate student Peter Welch and junior Walker Scaglione are the long stick middies and forces on the faceoff midfield. As short stick d-middies, John Prendergast, Terry Lindsay and Blake Leischow bring a lot of experience to the defensive squad.
- Joe Stein and Brian Smyth are back at the X after sharing duties last season. Freshman Jordan Ginder is the newest addition to the faceoff crew.
- In goal, senior Turner Uppgren has the most experience of a young group. After two games between the pipes, Uppgren sports an 11.28 goals against average and a. 436 save percentage.
Scouting Jacksonville
- Jacksonville is coming off of a season-opening loss at Detroit Mercy Feb. 2. The Dolphins scored three goals in the final 3:20 of the game, but couldn’t complete the comeback in the 9-8 loss to the Titans.
- Bo BowHunter paced the team in scoring with three goals and four points overall. Jack Pucci dished out three assists. Senior midfielder Eric Applegate and sophomore defenseman Dixon Smith earned Southern Conference Preseason All-Conference awards. Both were 2018 all-conference honorees.
- Hunter Sells manned the goal in the opener, making 17 saves and allowing only nine goals. At the X, Hunter Turner took 17 of 21 faceoffs, winning six of them. Smith anchored the defensive effort with three caused turnovers.
Seau Saving the Best for Last
- Jake Seau, in his fifth season, is off to a fast start. Against Furman, the California native registered his first multiple goal game with two scores. He followed that with two goals and an assist to push his season points total to seven. The seven points are four shy of his total from the previous 35 games combined.
