DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke men's lacrosse senior Ethan Powley earned the honor of a lifetime in front of his family and all of his Duke teammates Thursday afternoon as he was commissioned into the United States Navy in a ceremony in the Duke Chapel.
A member of the Navy ROTC program at Duke, Powley was one of 10 commissioned as his dad swore him in and his mother and brother had the honor of pinning him. Powley is a quantitative economics major from Duke and will graduate Sunday from Duke before leaving for his first assignment for the U.S. Navy.
A long-stick midfielder, the Wake Forest, N.C., native is an instrumental part of Duke's stalwart defense. He has played in all 16 games this season and owns 28 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers. For his career, he has played in 64 games and owns 93 ground balls and 52 caused turnovers.
The Blue Devils open NCAA Tournament play at No. 6 seed Johns Hopkins Saturday at 2:30 p.m., on ESPNU.
