DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke men’s lacrosse coaching staff held one of its best coaching clinics Thursday night with head coach John Danowski and assistant coaches Matt Danowski and Ned Crotty breaking down lacrosse with general vocabulary as well as in the box offense and defense fundamentals.

The first topic covered was basic general lacrosse vocabulary both on offense and defense the Blue Devils coaches think is important for players to develop. With consistent vocabulary it allows better communication from coaches to players as well as player to player.

Topics

Below are the topics discussed over the course of the two hours. Included in each topic was film review from a Duke fall practice session this fall.

In the Box: Offense and Defense Fundamentals

  • 1 vs 1 basics
  • 2 vs 2 decision making, feeding, cutting
  • 4 vs 4 developing offensive spacing, team defensive position, sliding, etc.

 

Developing Feeders

  • Hand placement, stick protection, ball speed, chemistry

 

Defending the Feeder

  • Stop the cutter, On hands vs. In Hands, Match ups – quickness, bruiser

 

The Lost Art of Cutting, Off-Ball Play

  • Timing: Better to be late than early and wait
  • Types of Cuts: Reactionary, Overplay, Schematic, Read your defender

 

Catching and Finishing as a Cutter

  • Receiving the pass, playing with both hands, finishing the ball

 

Attack the Recovery

  • A new term the Blue Devils have worked with this fall
