DURHAM, N.C.—For the third time this season, Duke has earned a pair of ACC weekly honors as junior midfielder Brad Smith and sophomore defenseman JT Giles-Harris were voted the ACC Men’s Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. This is the first honor for Smith and the second for Giles-Harris.
Smith earned his weekly recognition after scoring a career-high six points from four goals and two assists in leading the third-ranked Blue Devils past No. 6 Loyola 13-9. The Mountain Lakes, N.J., native kept the Blue Devils close in the first two quarters, scoring each of Duke’s first three goals. Smith’s third tally of the day – at 7:50 of the second quarter – sparked Duke’s 7‐0 run that put the Blue Devils ahead 9‐4.
After pulling Duke within one with a goal at 4-3, Smith provided the assist on the game‐tying goal. Late in the third quarter Smith tacked on a 10th goal for Duke, in what proved to be the game winner. He is third on the team in scoring with 12 goals and nine assists for 21 points.
Giles-Harris, a part of the vaunted Duke close defense, had a strong outing in holding Loyola to under 10 scores for the first time this season. The second-year starter caused three turnovers and picked up two ground balls. His three caused turnovers are a season‐best and matches his career high. Giles‐Harris and the Duke defense held the Greyhounds scoreless for 21:31 to allow the Blue Devils to go on their 7‐0 run and jump ahead 9‐4.
Duke, 6-1 overall, heads into a busy weekend with two games in two days in two different states. The Blue Devils face off at Towson, March 17 at 12 p.m., and Cleveland State the following afternoon at 1 p.m.
