EASTON, Pa. – Following a strong showing at the ACC Fencing Championships, the Duke men’s and women’s fencing squads will turn their attention to the individual portion of the season as they compete at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Saturday, March 12, hosted by Lafayette College.

A fencer’s performance at regionals will have a direct impact on their chance at qualifying for the NCAA Championships, as both their regular season resumé and placing at the regional meet will be considered when the field is selected next week.

Live results of the action in Pennsylvania can be found here.

FLASHBACK TO 2016

  • At last year’s regional meet, seven Blue Devils logged top-10 finishes in their respective weapons, highlighted by Pascual Di Tella’s second-place showing in men’s saber.
  • Kristen Coury led the women with a seventh-place finish in foil, while Haley Fisher and Julia Lee tied for eighth in saber and foil, respectively.

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Blue Devils hosted the ACC Championships in historic Cameron Indoor Stadium and both the men’s and women’s teams finished second in the team standings with a 2-1 ledger.
  • Individually, Di Tella claimed the men’s saber title, marking the first time a Duke male has garnered an ACC title since fencing returned as a league sponsored sport three years ago.
  • Agoston Walter, Eoin Gronningsater and Bryn Hammarberg also earned spots on the podium as they each claimed bronze in their respective weapons.
  • For the women, Rita Somogyi and Lindsay Sapienza placed second in individual women’s epee and saber.

SUPERB SABERISTS

  • Haley Fisher and Sapienza lead the Blue Devil women with 53-20 and 52-21 ledgers, respectively, followed by Jennifer Ling with a 47-26 record.

  • De Caire, Ling and Sapienza have each garnered ACC Fencer of the Week accolades this season.

FIERCE FOILISTS

  • The freshmen duo of Jonathan Schwartzman and Gronningsater has been unstoppable during their rookie campaigns, posting 42-10 and 43-9 records, respectively.
  • Fellow classmate Zuzu Tang owns a season record of 40-24 followed by Coury (33-25).
