Men Go Undefeated at Day One of Northwestern Duals

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Duke fencing program kicked off competition at the Northwestern Duals today on the campus of Notre Dame. The Blue Devil men posted a perfect 5-0 undefeated ledger while the women went 5-1 on the day.

Both the men and women registered wins over UC San Diego (M: 14-13, W: 15-12), Wayne State (M: 26-1, W: 24-3), University of Incarnate Word (M: 21-6, W: 23-4), Cal Tech (M: 22-5, W: 27-0) and Lawrence (M: 25-2, W: 26-1) while the women fell to fifth-ranked Ohio State (8-19).

Sophomore saberist Lindsay Sapienza headlined the Blue Devils today with a nearly perfect 16-1 overall ledger, which is her best showing this season. Freshman epeeist Maria Papadopoulos recorded 13 wins followed by senior Haley Fisher’s 12. Junior Rhiannon Harvey and freshman Julia Gianneschi led the foil squad with 11 wins each as Harvey went 11-0.

Freshman Brycen Rushing headlined the Blue Devil men today as he posted a nearly perfect 14-1 ledger in foil while fellow classmate San Ha Lim was right behind with 13 victories in saber. Sophomore Agoston Walter added 12 wins followed by Ping Ping Kitsiriboon for saber while sophomore Jonathan Schwartzman posted 11 victories and senior Jan Maceczek notched 10. Seniors Dean Ischiropoulos and Alec Ajnsztajn led the epeeists with eight wins.

The Blue Devils will be back in action tomorrow morning to close out the Northwestern Duals.
