DURHAM, N.C. – The ninth-ranked Duke men’s fencing team produced an undefeated performance on its home strips at the annual Duke Meet in Card Gymnasium. The Blue Devil men now own a season record of 20-4 (1-0 ACC) after their 4-0 showing.

On the day, the Duke men logged victories against ACC foe North Carolina (16-11), Brandeis (22-5), Johns Hopkins (23-4) and fifth-ranked Penn State (16-11). The victory over the Tar Heels marks the 24th year in a row in which Duke has defeated North Carolina while the victory over fifth-ranked Penn State is the second over a ranked opponent in two weeks as the Blue Devil men defeated 10th-ranked Stanford at the Northwestern Duals.

Pacing the Blue Devils Saturday was senior Jan Maceczek, finishing the competition with a 9-3 individual record as he helped guide the foil squad to a 4-0 finish. Sophomores Jonathan Schwartzman and Eoin Gronningsater also had solid showings with seven and six wins, respectively, as Gronningsater went undefeated.

Freshman Amit Sarma logged the best performance for the epeeists with eight victories followed by All-American junior Bryn Hammarberg with seven.

The 4-0 saber squad was led by senior Pascual Di Tella and sophomore Duncan De Caire as they each went 7-1 on the day.

Sunday’s portion of the Duke Meet will feature the women’s competition, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., in Card Gymnasium.
