DURHAM, N.C. – Junior Bryn Hammarberg was tabbed the Duke Student-Athlete of the Week after collecting his first ACC title in epee over the weekend at the 2018 ACC Fencing Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Hammarberg entered the semifinals as the fourth seed after posting an 8-4 ledger in pool play. The Maplewood, N.J., native faced top-seeded teammate Amit Sarma in a battle for the finals as Hammarberg secured the victory to go on to defeat second-seeded Ariel Simmons of Notre Dame (15-11) to notch the crown. Following his weekend performance, Hammarberg now owns a 51-20 overall ledger this season.
Hammarberg also helped the men’s team make history Saturday as the Blue Devils captured their first ACC title in program history.
The ninth-ranked Blue Devil men cruised to a 19-8 victory over the second-ranked team in the country, Notre Dame, and also defeated North Carolina (19-8) and Boston College (24-3) in route to the crown. Duke used an 8-1 advantage in epee and a 7-2 record in foil to hand defending national champion Notre Dame its first fencing loss in an ACC Championship since joining the conference in the 2014-15 season.
