Gronningsater Earns Top-30 Finish at Worlds

VERONA, Italy – The Duke fencing team was represented by two student-athletes at the 2018 World Fencing Championships in Verona, Italy. Sophomore All-America honoree Eoin Gronningsater and freshman Ping Ping Kitsiriboon competed in men’s foil and saber, respectively.

Gronningsater represented Ireland while Kitsiriboon competed for his home country of Thailand. Both Gronningsater and Kitsiriboon competed in the individual competition as well as the team event.

Gronningsater headlined the weekend as he placed 29th in the individual portion of the competition. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native went 4-2 in pool play to earn a bye in the table of 256. Gronningsater reeled off two victories before falling (15-14) to Luis Alfonso Delbergue of Spain in the table of 32.

In the team event, Ireland finished 37th after falling in the table of 64 (45-43) to Serbia.

Kitsiriboon finished in 111th in men’s saber with a 2-5 record in pool play, falling to eventual 18th-place finisher Yevgen Tryfonov of Ukraine (15-5).

As a team, Thailand concluded competition in 26th as they earned a bye in the table of 64. The squad fell in the table of 32 to eventual seventh-place finisher FIE (45-44).

Select Blue Devils will compete at the US Fencing Association North American Cup April 20-23 in Richmond, Va.
