DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke fencing team added its eighth signee for the 2018-19 recruiting class as foilist/epeeist Joe Choo signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to compete for the Blue Devils.
Choo comes to Duke from Las Vegas, Nev., currently attends Faith Lutheran High School and is a member of the Northwest Fencing Center under the direction of Yves Auriol, Simon Abram, Cody Mattern and current Duke assistant coach and former Northwest Fencing coach Christophe Duclos.
Choo was named to the Absolute Fencing All-Academic First Team three times. Most recently in 2018, he competed in the Anaheim Foil Grand Prix and captured silver in the team event at the Junior Olympics. In 2017, he notched bronze at the Junior Olympics for foil and recorded a top-16 finish at the same competition a year prior.
Outside of fencing, Choo is president of the Key Club, a volunteer coach at the Summerlin Fencing Club and a varsity quiz captain. Additionally, Choo is a member of the National Honor Society, Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, the Science National Honor Society and a part of Mu Alpha Theta.
