Three Blue Devils Conclude Spring Slate at NAC

RICHMOND, Va. – The Duke fencing team concluded its spring slate at the April North American Cup (NAC), hosted by the United States Fencing Association in Richmond, Va. The weekend was highlighted by former Blue Devil and current volunteer assistant coach Leslie Marx’s gold medal in the Vet-50 Women’s Epee competition.

Marx, who claimed the title of World Champion in October as she captured gold at the 2017 Veteran World Championships, added another gold medal to her collection. Marx produced a perfect 6-0 ledger in pool play to earn a bye in the table of 64. The epeeist reeled off five victories en route to the crown, defeating Cristina Ford (10-7) in the semifinal bout.

Also competing on Saturday was redshirt freshman Ben Stone. Stone finished 28th overall in Division I Men’s Saber after going 3-3 in pool play to secure a bye in the table of 128. The New York, N.Y., native fell in the table of 32 to eventual sixth-place finisher Alessandro Contreras (15-4).

Stone also competed alongside fencers from the Manhattan Fencing Center in the Division I Men's Saber Team competition and secured a silver medal.

Wrapping up the weekend for the Blue Devils was freshman Maria Papadopoulos in Division I Women’s Epee. The product of Ashburn, Va., went 2-3 in pools and earned a bye in the table of 128 before falling to eventual silver medalist Catherine Nixon (15-9) in the table of 64.
