MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – Members of the Duke fencing team traveled to Milwaukee, Wisc., for the first North American Cup (NAC) of the fall slate Oct. 12-14, which was hosted by the United States Fencing Association.
Recent Blue Devil graduate Pascual Di Tella highlighted the weekend by placing in the top 25 in Division I Men’s Saber. Di Tella went 5-1 during pool play to earn a bye in the table of 256. The Argentina native won two straight bouts before falling in the table of 32 to Andrew Dodo (15-7) to finish 22nd overall.
Also competing in Division I Men’s Saber was redshirt sophomore Ben Stone. Stone registered a 5-1 ledger in pools and received a bye in the table of 256 before falling in the table of 64 to Alessandro Contreras (15-8) to finish the weekend 37th.
Sophomore Maria Papadopoulos and freshman Ava Navarro represented the Blue Devil women in Division I Women’s Epee where Papadopoulos finished 58th Friday. Papadopoulos went 2-3 in the first round of pools before a 2-4 showing in the second round before falling in the table of 64 while Navarro registered a 4-1 ledger in the first round of pool play and 1-4 in the second round to conclude her time in Wisconsin in 116th.
The foil squad was represented by rookies Julia Noguchi and Zoe Superville as the pair both placed in the top 100 in Division I Women’s Foil. Noguchi produced a nearly perfect 5-1 log in pool play to earn a bye in the table of 256 before falling to Isabella Ravenne Sabatini (15-13) to earn 66th place while Superville went 3-3 in pools and received a bye in the table of 256 before falling to Paige Luong (15-13) to finish 100th.
Competition for the Blue Devils concluded with junior Aidan McGinnis in Division I Men’s Epee. McGinnis registered a 5-1 record in the first set of pool play, earned a bye in the table of 256 and went 1-4 in the second round of pools before falling to Ivan Zagoruiko (15-9) in the table of 128 to place 110th.
