GREENSBORO, N.C. – Duke senior Rita Somogyi has been named the 2016-17 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Fencing Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Duke junior Pascual Di Tella has been selected as the 2016-17 ACC Men’s Fencing Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Somogyi and Di Tella headline the All-ACC Academic Men’s and Women’s Fencing Teams, as announced today.
Somogyi finished second in the épée individual competition at the ACC Championship after going 11-4 during pool play and defeating Notre Dame’s Madeline Antekeier in the semifinals. A chemistry major from Portland, Oregon, she earned Fencer of the Week honors after leading her team at the Duke Meeting February.
A political science and philosophy double major from Vicente Lopez, Buenos Aires, Di Tella became the first Blue Devil male to win a league title since fencing returned as a league sponsored sport three year when he defeated Notre Dame’s Jonah Shainberg in the sabre title bout. Di Tella finished 21st at the NCAA Championship, finished the year with an FSF of 106.51 with a record of 37-8, and was named the ACC Men’s Fencer of the Year for sabre.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.
Alongside Somogyi and Di Tella, senior Julia Lee, sophomore Camille Esnault, Rhiannon Harvey and freshmen Jonathan Schwartzman, Eoin Gronningsater and Agoston Walter were named to the All-ACC Academic Team for the 2016-17 campaign.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
