Duke Heads to Notre Dame for Northwestern Duals

DURHAM, N.C. – After one week off from competition, the Duke fencing program will travel to Notre Dame to compete in the Northwestern Duals for two days of competition. The Blue Devils will face 12 schools from across the nation at the Castellan Family Fencing Center on Notre Dame’s campus.

The ninth-ranked men will face Air Force, Cal Tech, Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, Lawrence University, No. t2 Ohio State, UC San Diego, No. 10 Stanford, University of the Incarnate Word and Wayne State. The women will take on Air Force, Cal Tech, Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, Lawrence University, No. 8 Northwestern, No. 5 Ohio State, UC San Diego, Stanford, University of the Incarnate Word and Wayne State.

The Blue Devil men are coming off of compiling a 4-1 ledger at the Philadelphia Invitational and are 7-3 overall while the women are 5-5 after going 3-2.

The men’s side will be highlighted by sophomore Eoin Gronningsater (foil), junior Bryn Hammarberg (epee) and Agoston Walter (saber).

Gronningsater leads the Blue Devil men with a 21-3 overall record this season in foil while Hammarberg is right on his heels with 20 victories. Walter has seen action in both meets this year and owns a 14-4 ledger.

Freshman Julia Gianneschi (foil) has led the Duke women two weeks in a row and enters the weekend with a 21-9 record. Junior Claudia Wrampelmeier (epee) led the women’s squad at the Philadelphia Invitational with a near perfect 11-2 record and has 17 wins under her belt so far this season. Sophomore Lindsay Sapienza leads the saber squad with 14 victories.
