DURHAM, N.C. – Duke field hockey head coach Pam Bustin and the Blue Devil program are set to welcome five freshmen to Durham for the 2017 campaign. Goalkeeper Lydia Smeltz will join the Blue Devils from Harrisburg, Pa.

Prior to Duke: Smeltz completed her prep career in the cage at Central Dauphin, where she was a two-time Pennlive Mid-Penn first team honorable mention selection. She totaled 621 saves in four seasons and logged an 85 percent goals against average. Smeltz was named to the Pennlive Field Hockey All-Star second team as a senior after notching 207 saves and allowing just 44 goals.

What is your best field hockey memory?
LS: Playing on Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium for the first time.
When did you start playing field hockey?
LS: I started playing field hockey in sixth grade. My friend encouraged me to come to our district wide youth field hockey camp that summer and I've been playing ever since.
Who has had the largest impact on your life?
LS: My family has had the biggest impact on my life as they have helped me shape my values and always encouraged me to follow my dreams, no matter how big.
Why did you choose Duke?
LS: I chose Duke because the girls were incredibly welcoming and caring. The coaches are also extremely supportive and want to help me reach my potential. Finally, Duke offers one of the best undergraduate research programs in the country.
What are your goals for your collegiate career?
LS: Help Duke field hockey win a national title.

If you were to play another sport, what would it be? Rowing
Hidden talent: I make a mean chocolate chip cookie and I love to cook and bake
Best advice you've received: Have confidence in your skill and your preparation
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Either working in a research lab or beginning a pediatric oncology residency, and coming home to three dogs
