DURHAM, N.C. – After going unbeaten at the B1G/ACC Cup over the past two seasons, the Blue Devils return to the home of USA Field Hockey at Spooky Nook Sports this weekend for a pair of tournament contests. Ranked second in the country, the Blue Devils are coming off of posting a shutout in their season opener, a 5-0 victory at William & Mary last Friday.

Tickets for B1G/ACC Cup contests are $10 for adults and $5 for college students with a school ID and children 14 and under. A two-game ticket package is also available. For more information, click here.

Blue Devils Post Clean Sheet in Season Opener
• Leading William & Mary by a 1-0 margin at halftime of last Friday’s season opener, the Blue Devils tallied four second-half scores to open the year with a shutout victory.

• A strong defensive effort limited the Tribe to just six shots - and only two on goal - for the evening.
• Entering the weekend, Duke is one of six teams nationally to boast a 0.00 goals against average through the first week of play.

Teams with 0.00 Goals Against Average
Syracuse (3-0)

Boston University (2-0)
UConn (2-0)
Duke (1-0)
Lafayette (1-0)
Ohio State (1-0)

In the National Landscape
• In addition to being tied at No. 1 in the nation in goals against average and shutouts per game, Duke is second in the country in scoring margin (5.00) behind only Rutgers (6.00).

• The Blue Devils are also tied for fifth nationally in goals per game (5.00).
• Head coach Pam Bustin’s squad paces the ACC in scoring margin and defensive saves and is tied with Syracuse for the top spot in goals against average and goals allowed.
• Individually, redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Sammi Steele is tied with six others for No. 1 nationally in goals against average and save percentage.

Against Ranked Opponents
• Duke will face its first two ranked foes of the 2017 season this weekend in No. 6 Maryland and No. 14 Northwestern.

• Since 2013, the program has compiled a 40-25 ledger against ranked teams.
• The Blue Devils went 12-4 against ranked foes last fall en route to finishing No. 1 in the NCAA RPI and FieldHockeyCorner.com’s Strength of Schedule rankings.

Maryland Series History
• The Terrapins hold a 32-11-3 lead in the all-time series but Duke has claimed each of the past three meetings. The Blue Devils’ last two victories have come at the B1G/ACC Cup.

• Last year in Lancaster, Duke prevailed in a battle of top-six teams by a 1-0 score. Goalkeeper Sammi Steele totaled a career-best nine saves to earn the shutout.
Ashley Kristen’s goal off a pass from Alexa Mackintire in the 42nd minute proved to be the difference.
• Two of the last four meetings in the series have been decided in overtime.

Scouting the Terrapins
• Ranked sixth in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Preseason Poll, Maryland heads to Lancaster with a 1-0 ledger after topping Saint Joseph’s, 2-1, in its season opener.

• The Terrapins featured seniors Lein Holsboer and Carrie Hanks and junior Linnea Gonzales on the Big Ten Players to Watch list released last week. Holsboer was a third team All-America selection last fall while Hanks and Gonzales both earned All-Mid Atlantic Region recognition.
• Maryland went 18-5 in 2016 and reached the NCAA quarterfinals.
• Former Blue Devil standout and Team USA member Stefanie Fee (‘11) is a volunteer assistant coach with the Terrapins.

Northwestern Series History
Alyssa Chillano tallied two goals, including the game winner in overtime, to lift the Blue Devils to a 3-2 victory over the Wildcats at last year’s B1G/ACC Cup.

• With the win, Duke moved to 5-3 all-time against Northwestern and 2-1 when facing the Wildcats on a neutral turf.

Scouting the Wildcats
• Northwestern sits at 2-1 after collecting its second shutout of the season Tuesday in a 4-0 win at Providence.

• The 14th-ranked Wildcats suffered their lone loss to date at No. 4 UConn.
• Goalkeeper Annie Kalfas has notched a 1.20 goals against average and an .850 save percentage in the three contests. Offensively, Kirsten Mansfield and Puck Pentenga pace the squad with three points (1g, 1a) each.

Duke vs. the Big Ten
• The Blue Devils are 37-54-4 historically against teams from the Big Ten.

• Duke will face another Big Ten opponent during the regular season in Iowa. The Hawkeyes visit Durham Oct. 8.
